At first glance, the works of Maury Samuel may appear to belong to the realm of abstraction. Yet as our gaze explores them, it uncovers—almost hidden—the form of an eye. Our perception of the canvas then shifts, and it is through the gaze—our own, but also the one depicted—that the work reveals its full depth. What had seemed just moments earlier to be purely abstract forms now gives rise to the outline of a mouth, a face, or a body. And thus, a dreamlike and shimmering world unfolds before us—intriguing, too.
